In a bid to enhance road safety, the Shillong traffic police have urged parents to give helmet to children when riding pillion on two-wheelers.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said it has been observed that while parents and guardians riding two-wheelers often wear helmets, children riding as pillion passengers or standing in front are frequently left without any head protection. This exposes them to serious risk of injury or fatality in the event of an accident.
In the interest of child safety, parents are urged to cooperate in safeguarding young lives on the road, the SP said.
Failure to comply will result in penalties as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, he added.
