Concerned over frequent landslides at Sonapur tunnel along the national highway 6, the Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) Jaiñtia Zone has demanded the State government to extend four-lane from Jowai bypass to Ratacherra.
Stating that the four-lane is the only solution to the inconveniences faced by commuters, who had to bear long-hours of traffic jams, the organisation said, the inability to find solutions to contain landslides has brought disgrace to the state, as the highway links key places in Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur.
HANM said as some major incidents of landslides occurred on this stretch of the road during the monsoon season in the past two years that put the travellers in great danger.
Further, the organisation said rampant overloading of trucks is creating a lot of problems and demanded that the government should ban those trucks travelling through Lumshnong to Malidor.
