Slamming the State government for its apathy towards the problems faced by people of Mawhati constituency, the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), Ri-Bhoi district unit has demanded blacktopping of the pavement of Umsning-Umsiang road before the State Assembly elections in 2023.
HANM yesterday organised a public meeting at Jatah playground to discuss this long pending demand of the people. However, only a few local villagers and headmen attended the meeting.
It was alleged that some leaders from Mawhati has asked the people not to attend the meeting.
According to HANM Ri-Bhoi district, the inter-state road from Umsning to Umsiang connecting to Assam was left abandoned for the last several decades and the dilapidated condition of the road had caused immense hardship to local villagers and commuters.
Speaking to the media persons, HANM Ri-Bhoi district president, Pateng Myrsing condemned local leaders from Mawhati constituency for asking people not to attend the meeting.
“These leaders are doing this for their vested political interest without thinking about the hardship and problems faced by the people,” Myrsing said.
He also said that the deplorable condition of the road has irked the majority of local villagers even as he said that HANM will not give up its demand for blacktopping of the road before the Assembly polls in 2023.
Myrsing also hit out at the MLA of Mawhati constituency for not taking this issue seriously.
He said that HANM Ri-Bhoi district would soon meet the PWD minister and demand immediate blacktopping of the road.
