The historic victory for the BJP in Gujarat has inspired the Meghalaya unit of the party to dream big for the 2023 state elections.
BJP state president Ernest Mawrie congratulated the party machinery for attaining another clear mandate. Mawrie said that this victory showed that the public continue to believe in the party.
Yesterday saw the saffron outfit crowned as unchallenged rulers of Gujarat.
Mawrie said that the people of Meghalaya are, like those of Gujarat, focused on development and will thus also choose the BJP at next year’s election.
“In the last eight years, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, different schemes have been proposed for the people of Meghalaya but the state government has not taken any interest,” Mawrie said. “It is therefore necessary for the people of the state to vote for the BJP so that development schemes can reach the last person in the state.”
The Meghalaya BJP is set to contest in all 60 constituencies at the Assembly election. Mawrie added that the party has requested the central leadership to announce the candidate list as early as possible.
Although the BJP is part and parcel of the ruling MDA government, it does not shy away from criticising it. Mawrie today questioned the government over the funds used under the FOCUS farmer support programme. Stating that it is not only the BJP that should raise corruption issues, he said there are other political parties they are alliance partners and if they are concerned they should raise the issue.
He further alleged that the FOCUS scheme is being misused by NPP candidates in some constituencies, like West Shillong, who are going around offering the public Rs 4,000-5,000 even though the scheme is meant for producer groups and farmers in rural areas. Mawrie is rumoured to be interested in contesting from West Shillong.
