Shillong, Apr 14: The health of Green-Tech Foundation (GTF) chairman H Bansiewdor Nonglang, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since April 9 over the Lumpongdeng Island issue, is deteriorating even as doctors advised that he be taken to a hospital.
On Tuesday evening doctors and magistrates made a second attempt to convince Nonglang to receive treatment in hospital after his vitals weakened but again he refused.
Meanwhile, a delegation of Voice of the People Party (VPP) MDCs from the KHADC and JHADC met the agitating GTF member and pledged their support to him.
Jamshaphrang Pohtam, VPP MDC from War Central, told reporters that the party supports the initiative of the GTF members and will go all out to force the government to cancel the deal to build a resort on Lumpongdeng Island on Umiam Lake.
Pohtam said that many youths of the state are trapped in the menace of drugs and alcohol and coming up with a spa will bring more social evils. This follows from yesterday’s comment by VPP supremo and Nongkrem MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit, who claimed that the resort will lead to an increase in prostitution.
Pohtam stated that the government’s relationship with the people is more important than its image with their corporate friends.
Meanwhile, Nehimaia Lamare, MDC of Mukhla Ummulong, said that the VPP expressed concern that the government has not invited the GTF for talks over the group’s grievances.
According to Lamare, this government has forgotten about social development and saving the state’s ecology in its quest to reach the stated goal of becoming a $10 billion economy by 2028.
