The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Mindikgre Regional Unit, has questioned the Meghalaya Government Construction Company Ltd (MGCCL) over a five-year delay in the start of construction of an integrated police welfare complex that was to come up in the town of Baghmara, South Garo Hills.
The project, as per reports, was sanctioned in June 2015 but is yet to take off. It was sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) with an amount of Rs 1,285.2 lakhs earmarked.
The project, as per an RTI, was awarded to MGCCL but has seen no movement taking place in Baghmara on the building.
“This letter is to remind you, question your integrity and to take stern legal action if necessary as to why the project which has already been sanctioned, has not been initiated yet,” said President of the unit, Greneth Sangma in a sternly worded letter to the Managing Director of MGCCL.
Greneth Sangma added that, as per information obtained through the RTI, from the Planning Department’s Deputy Secretary, the first instalment has been allotted and released to MGCCL but nothing has happened on the ground even after five years.
The NGO added that in view of the information obtained work on the welfare projected needed to start with immediate effect.
“If this is not done we will take up necessary agitations. This cannot be allowed to happen to the development of our state,” added Greneth Sangma.
