The Siju unit of the Garo Students Union (GSU) has written to the Sub Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO) of South Garo Hills to highlight the deplorable condition of the Siju Songgital School.
In a memo submitted yesterday, Ralseng Sangma, the President of the unit, stated that the school building has gone without necessary maintenance for decades, leading to poor quality education for the children.
As has been the case with other such structures, the school building literally has half a roof with the doors and windows completely destroyed.
The school was set up in 1962 and, according to the school management committee, has been the cause of social uplift in the area.
“The school today still has a large enrollment despite the terrible condition it is in. It has been an eyesore to the people as well as to us. It is not feasible to take classes in such a structure. It is impossible to do so in any season – winter, summer or monsoon,” added Sangma.
The pressure group urged the SDSEO to take immediate cognizance of the situation and work on immediately repairing the school for the sake of education of those affected by the poor school condition.
