The Phulbari unit of the Garo Students Union (GSU) was left disappointed after they went to complain about power cuts to the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL) office on Friday only to find it vacant.
The office “was open and there was no officer at the station nor a single staff [member] present at the time,” the GSU said in a release yesterday.
However, the members of the pressure group did meet with officials from FEDCO, a private company tasked by the state government to manage the electricity supply system in parts of Garo Hills.
This official reportedly told the GSU that the problem of power cuts is due to the non-functional Chibinang power station.
Requests to ministers and civil servants go unheeded, leaving Phulbari, Rajabala and Tikrikilla residents in the dark, the GSU said, while demanding a solution to the crisis.
