The Garo Students Union (GSU) has added its condemnation of political parties who will be fielding non-tribal candidates in April’s Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Pressure groups and social organisations in Garo Hills have been clamouring for the exclusion of non-tribals in the GHADC. The GSU, along with other like-minded organizations, has been pushing for a separate electoral roll to exclude all non-tribals from voting or contesting.
“Time and again various political parties have been playing with the sentiment of the A’chik people by endorsing and encouraging non-tribals to contest the MDC elections and, in doing so, paved the way for the destruction of A’chik custom, culture and law,” GSU President Zikku Balgra N Marak said in a press release today.
