In its continuous effort to help the poor and weaker section of the society the ‘Shlem jingiarap ia kiba duk u Rupang’ today donated blankets, warm clothes, utensils etc to nine households at a programme held at Mawkhar Christian Higher Secondary School, Shillong.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo in her speech lauded the group for the noble endeavour and all the individuals and groups for their valuable time and contribution to help and assist the most inadequate section of the society.
Urging people to be valiant to enquire and avail various government schemes she said, “We have many government schemes that are designed to help the poor and weaker section of the society. We do the registration for the casual labourers via the e-SHRAM so that they get the assistance and we go to every household for the Adhaar enrolment so that they can avail the benefits and likewise other schemes. The health department goes to every locality to encourage the people to take the Covid-19 vaccination so that they are protected from the coronavirus.”
Laloo recalled the coronavirus lockdown where lakhs of people in the state suffered because their livelihood and way of earning was restricted to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. She said it was during the lockdown that the unity among the people became stronger and the assistance to the weaker sections affected by the lockdown started pouring in from various quarters.
She expressed hope that the people of the state will unite to fight the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic that has already started to resurface and affect other states and countries.
“We don’t know what the future holds for us as we have seen that the in some states the Covid restriction has started again given the third wave of the pandemic but we must trust in God and work together in unity to combat and contain the spread of the coronavirus, ” she said.
Secretary of the committee, Babu Kular Khongjirem, R M Shabong, Editor and Publisher Rupang besides others were present at the programme.
The beneficiaries included persons with disabilities, orphans, etc. from remote villages of West Jaiñtia Hills, Pynursla, Nongthliew, Mawkasiang, Puriang, Sadew and others. They were given assistance worth Rs 5000 each and an additional amount of Rs 500 for their taxi fares.
In its 10 years journey, Khongjirem informed that the total fund collected by the group this year is Rs 75, 950 that will be further distributed to the deserving beneficiaries after they are identified.
