North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum today dared the Conrad Sangma government to “give a strong and befitting response” to the allegations of corruption against the government made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Initiating a short duration discussion in the Assembly today, Nongrum recalled the statements by Modi and Shah during the recent Assembly election campaigns in Garo Hills where they had declared that the MDA government is the most corrupt in India.
The VPP legislator asked if the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister would be so careless to publicly declare that the MDA government is the most corrupt in India.
“Do you think persons of their stature will speak like that without having enough knowledge about what is going on in the way the funds released by the Central government are spent in the State?” he asked.
“If the charges of corruption against the State government are untrue, then it requires that the government of the day give a strong and befitting response to the remarks of the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister,” Nongrum added.
However, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in his reply said that during elections anybody can level any charges.
“We said what we have to say during elections. Many of our coalition partners too made allegations against NPP and NPP also made similar charges against our coalition partners and other political parties. But the people have given their verdict. The people have democratically voted for us. The people have confidence in our party,” Sangma said.
Highlighting the various achievements made by his government in the implementation of various schemes and programmes, Sangma also said that the Central government had praised the performance of the MDA government.
“The fact is that today in this MDA-2 government we are working together with the BJP. Even the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister attended the swearing in ceremony for the first time in the State’s history. This speaks volume about their confidence in this government,” Sangma asserted.
