The Meghalaya government today officially announced the retransfer of Ward’s Lake to the Tourism Department with a revitalization programme to unlock its full potential.
Also known as Pollock’s Lake-an artificial water body was constructed in 1893-1894 under the Chief Commissionership of Sir William Erskine Ward. The place is one of the State’s major tourist attractions because of its lush garden with flower beds and cobble-stone footpaths and the iconic wooden white bridge.
The ‘Ward’s Lake Revitalization Programme’, which is an investment of Rs 18 crore, aims to transform the lake into a thriving cultural and recreational arena. Enhancement plans include the installation of sound and light shows, musical fountains, new cafes, entertainment zones for family and children, as well as extension of visiting hours till 10 pm.
The plan also focuses on infrastructures to accommodate increased footfall. It includes widening of existing roads and development of pedestrian-friendly walkways.
Earlier, the government had also announced a 1.2 km promenade opposite Ward’s Lake to be developed, which will include plazas, shops, vending zones, parking facilities and restaurant. These developments aim to give new impetus to local businesses and also provide recreational avenues for the local community and visitors.
The revitalization program is expected to be completed in two phases. The first phase is the introduction of new entertainment features and infrastructural developments.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, Director Cyril V.D. Diengdoh, Dr. Vijay Kumar Commissioner & Secretary, Harish Chandra Chaudhary, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and officials were also present on the occasion.
