The state government will consider working with pressure groups and stakeholders on a way to jointly push the central government to include the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Cabinet minister Marcuise Marak today informed that his recent visit to New Delhi as part of a delegation led by Tura MP Agatha Sangma and Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma helped them understand that the Khasi and Garo languages are already there in the list of consideration with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
The delegation had sought for the addition of Garo to the list of consideration but Marak said that the central government officials told them that Garo had already been included.
He added that since they now have clarity, the government may also consider working together with pressure groups and also with the other stakeholders to pressure the Centre.
