The state government has sanctioned Rs 15 crore for an indigenous cultural centre to be set up in the Mawkhar neighbourhood of Shillong, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed today.
He said this to reporters on the sidelines of the third and last day of the Shad Suk Mynsiem festival of the Seng Khasi Seng Kmie. “As we have always stated, the cultural aspect of our traditions needs to be preserved and needs to be promoted and it is in line with that thought process that we are having the indigenous cultural centre. Approximately Rs 15 crore has been sanctioned for it,” Sangma said, adding that the foundation will be laid in May given that April is not considered to be an auspicious month among the Khasis.
Sangma said that he is happy that the government is finally able to fulfill this long pending demand of the Seng Khasi, an organisation founded 125 years ago to champion the preservation of indigenous Khasi religion and culture in the face of the onslaught of Western mores and Christianity.
