Following the Supreme Court order passed on July 27 in WPC 643 for 2015, the State government has decided to revise the pay of judges under the Meghalaya Judicial Service Rules, 2006 and the Meghalaya Higher Judicial Service Rules, 2015.

The new revised pay notified recently by the Law Department shall be as per pay matrix at Table I and applicable with effect from January 1, 2016 and shall be extended to all judicial officers against their existing pay. The notification also said that the existing allowances shall continue until such order passed by the Supreme Court.

The judicial officers shall be entitled to Central Dearness Allowance as notified by Central government from time to time with effect from January 1, 2016.

The arrear pay shall be paid after deduction of the 30 per cent interim relief which included 25 per cent in cash within a period of three months, another 25 per cent to be paid in cash within three months thereafter. The balance 50 per cent has to be paid on or before the end of June 2023.

The Supreme Court has on July 27 ordered implementation of an enhanced pay scale for judicial officers across the country with retrospective effect from January 1, 2016 as recommended by the Second National Judicial Pay Commission.

The top court was hearing a plea of the All India Judges Association which has raised many issues including the review of service conditions of judicial officers.

“Revision of pay structure indicated in Table 1 shall be accepted and the same shall be implemented with effect from January 1, 2016. Arrears shall be computed by adjusting the interim relief and the balance of 25 per cent be paid in cash within a period of three months and another 25 per cent within another three months, and balance 50 per cent to be paid in the first quarter of 2023,” said the bench which comprised of Chief Justice N V Ramana, Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli.
