A girl who was allegedly kidnapped by a relative and sexually molested was rescued by Ri-Bhoi police yesterday evening.
The girl was heading from Kynshi to Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills for her studies when she boarded a taxi (ML 05 U 2717) driven by her relative, Finance Chester Pariong.
Instead of taking the main road, the suspect took a bylane from Mawmaram with the excuse that he had work in Shillong. This raised the girl’s suspicions and she was able to inform her relatives of this.
Mairang police alerted their colleagues in Umiam, Ri-Bhoi, that, based on the location of the girl’s mobile phone, the taxi was on its way to Lad Umsaw and a checkpoint was set up and the vehicle halted. The girl was rescued and the man detained.
During the journey, it is alleged that Pariong had tried to sexually harass the girl.
The case has been handed over to Mairang police station for further investigation.
