Shillong, Feb 21: Leading gastroenterologists and endoscopy experts from across the country gathered in Shillong today for the first annual conference of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI), Northeast Chapter.
The event held at the Windermere Resorts was organised by SGEI with support from the Gastro & Liver Foundation of Meghalaya and Supercare Hospital, Shillong.
About 60 faculty members participated in the presentations, and around 200 delegates attended the conference, reflecting the growing academic momentum and expanding gastroenterology services in the Northeast region.
The scientific program featured 18 eminent speakers from premier institutions nationwide.
Key topics included advancements in Zoom Endoscopy, Artificial Intelligence in Endoscopy, Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), management of GI perforations, non-variceal GI bleed, pancreatic malignancy, GERD management, Hepatitis B decision-making challenges, and advanced procedures such as Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) and Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD).
A panel discussion on “Obstructive Jaundice” and interactive clinical case discussions added practical depth to the academic sessions.
Speaking on the occasion, President Dr. Rangksan Singh Thangkhiew said the conference aimed to bridge academic gaps, bring national expertise to our region, and empower local practitioners with the latest advancements in minimally invasive GI care.
He said the Northeast region has immense potential in the field of gastroenterology and therapeutic endoscopy. “Our vision is to ensure that patients in the Northeast receive world-class endoscopic care without having to travel outside the region,” Dr. Thangkhiew said.
The conference marks a significant milestone for the Northeast Chapter and reinforces its commitment to academic excellence and advancement of gastrointestinal endoscopy in the region.
