The Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong Jowai has complained to the Meghalaya High Court that garbage has started piling up all over again in Jowai.
It also said that the earlier measures taken need to be revived to rid Jowai town of the rubbish.
The headmen’s body stated this during the hearing of its PIL in the Meghalaya High Court today.
Following the complaint, the division bench of the High Court directed the Jowai Municipal Board to take immediate measures to deal with the day to day problem of garbage piling up.
“It is not acceptable, particularly towards the end of the monsoon, that garbage will be left in the streets or outside homes. The Municipal Board has to find ways of dealing with the issues even as the State may plan a compost plant or other long-term measures for dealing with the issues,” the court said.
During the hearing, the State government informed the court that it proposed to set up a compost plant in or near Jowai to deal with the garbage problem in the town.
Meanwhile, the High Court has listed the matter for hearing on September 14. It also directed the State government to indicate by way of a report to be filed by any responsible officer about the time-frame within which the compost plant may be set up and the manner in which the government may render assistance to the Jowai Municipal Board to deal with the garbage problem till then.
