Police busted a gang of robbers wanted in petrol pump robberies during a raid in Ryngsong Shylla near Umlawang village, East Jaiñtia Hills District in the wee hours today.
Police have recovered one AK-47 rifle, 14 live rounds of AK series ammunition, machetes, a motor cycle bearing registration number AS 27 D 2482 and several other incriminating materials.
Those arrested have been identified as Jotish Daimary (43) of Udalguri in Assam, Bipul Basumatry (37) of Bhergaon, Udalguri, Sansoma Mooshahary (32) of Kusung Desa, Chirang in Assam, Shankar Boro (35) of Pandbai, Udalguri and Fajal Haque (33) of Hablakha, Kamrup rural.
On a petrol pump robbery spree, the gang had made off with Rs 2.5 lakh in cash from a petrol refilling centre in 14th Mile, Ri Bhoi on January 8, followed by two other centres at Khliehriat on January 11 where they looted Rs 6 lakh from both and also netted Rs 2.8 lakh from another in Shillong on February 6.
East Jaiñtia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa this was a major breakthrough for the district police as they were also investigating into a petrol pump robberies at Khliehriat.
The arrest was made possible after police launched a special operation on the intervening night of March 11 and 12. He said the four persons were arrested from a hideout at Ryngsong Shylla while their accomplice, Fajal Haque was picked up from Guwahati with help from the neighbor police.
“In this connection, a thorough investigation is being carried to unearth the entire conspiracy,” Dhanoa added.
