A delegation of State BJP leaders led by their president Rikman G. Momin will meet the central party leaders in New Delhi tomorrow to discuss the party candidate for the upcoming Assembly by-election in Gambegre constituency.
During the meeting, the State BJP leaders will also convey to the central leadership about the offer by State BJP vice president Bernard Marak to contest the by-poll.
“However, it all depends on the central party leadership to decide whether to field a candidate for the Gambegre by-election,” a party leader said today.
Three political parties have already announced their candidates for the by-election. They include NPP, Congress and Trinamool Congress.
The NPP candidate is Mehtab Chandee Sangma, wife of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The Congress’ candidate is Jingjang Marak while the Trinamool Congress nominee is Sadhiarani M. Sangma, wife of former minister Zenith Sangma. She is also an MDC in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
Gambegre seat fell vacant after the resignation of sitting Congress MLA Saleng A. Sangma on June 10 following his election as Lok Sabha MP from the Tura parliamentary seat.
The election process for Gambegre began with the issuance of notification on October 18. The last date for filing nominations is October 25. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on October 28. The date for withdrawal of nominations is October 30. The election will be held on November 13 and results will be declared on November 23.
Already, the model code of conduct is in force throughout West Garo Hills where Gambegre Assembly constituency is located.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today campaigned for his wife Mentab Chandee Sangma at Sangjengpara village under Gambegre constituency.
Sangma appealed to the people to support the NPP candidate while he also assured all developmental assistance to the constituency if the party wins the election.
