Former Chief Executive Member of the KHADC, Cleophas B Syiem, joined the BJP at a function here today.
Syiem and some of his supporters joined the saffron party in the presence of BJP district president B Suting, state party vice-president Everist Myrsing and others.
Speaking at the programme, Syiem said he quit the National People’s Party because the state government (which is led by the NPP but also supported by the BJP) failed to meet its commitments in terms of fulfilling many aspirations of the people of Ri-Bhoi.
Syiem had formerly been a Congress Party MDC and claimed to have brought in much development for Nongpoh but the party failed to follow through with many of its promised projects, especially when Dr Mukul Sangma took over the leadership from DD Lapang.
Witnessing the “disrespect” of the Congress towards Lapang, he followed the veteran politician from Ri-Bhoi into the NPP in 2017 but it has also failed the people of Ri-Bhoi, Syiem added, with many projects diverted to Garo Hills.
