Fire gushed out of a drilling hole at Aragittim village located five kilometers from Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills today.
According to reports, PHE staff and technicians were drilling the ground for a Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project to provide drinking water to the village.
However, at around 3:30 pm during the process of drilling, fire gushed out of the drilling hole much to the shock and scare of the workers.
It was suspected that the fire was caused by the presence of a petroleum product underground.
Fire tenders from Mahendraganj fire service were pressed into action and they were able to douse the fire.
It was also reported that foam and bubbles emitted from the drilling hole.
Police have cordoned off the area and experts are expected to arrive tomorrow to ascertain the cause of the fire.
