Several business establishments run by non-tribals at the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) complex in Umiam, Ri-Bhoi, were forced to close by the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) for allegedly not obtaining valid documents from the competent authority.
The pressure group conducted a spot inspection today and found that many businesses were running without valid documents like trading and labour licences, which are supposed to be obtained from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
The FKJGP strongly condemned the KHADC for failing to check on such illegal establishments MIDC complex.
Local FKJGP leader Shanlang Diengdoh said that having these companies in Ri-Bhoi is not helping the unemployment problem in the district because all their workers are non-locals.
