Shillong, Aug 31: To prevent traffic congestion and ensure public safety, the District Magistrate of Eastern West Khasi Hills, Anita Kharpor, has prohibited the organisation of fishing competitions and lucky draws within 1km on either side of National Highway 44(E) in the district.
The decision comes after a massive traffic jam occurred on August 27 along the Kynshi–Mawlangren stretch of the highway, where commuters were stranded for nearly 3 to 4 hours due to overcrowding at a fishing competition and lucky draw event.
Similar incidents have occurred in the past, causing inconvenience and disruption to the public. The organisers of such events have also failed to comply with the conditions laid down in earlier orders, prompting the District Magistrate to impose a ban on such competitions under Section 163 of the BNSS 2023.
The ban aims to prevent repeated disruptions to traffic movement and ensure the safety and convenience of the public. With this decision, the district administration seeks to strike a balance between promoting public events and maintaining law and order in the region.
