Shillong, Aug 4: The Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM) convened a consultative meeting recently here.
The meeting brought together representatives from various Seng Samla and Rangbah Shnong across Shillong, along with professional counsellors. They discussed providing counselling services and facilitating admission into rehabilitation centres for drug users apprehended by Seng Samla volunteers.
This initiative is the first-of-its-kind effort in Meghalaya’s fight against drug abuse. The meeting was attended by the Superintendent of Police of Shillong City, officers from the Directorate of Social Welfare, including the Assistant Director of Social Defence and the Social Welfare Officer, Anti-Drugs.
The attendees provided insights on the need for coordinated efforts between community groups and professional counsellors.
Participants proposed several suggestions, focusing on safeguarding the well-being of Seng Samla volunteers. They also discussed ensuring humane and effective handling of individuals in need of rehabilitation, while streamlining processes for their admission into treatment facilities.
The meeting also explored providing counselling services to both users and families in various neighbourhoods.
