Shillong, Jun 3: The finance department has granted approval for financial assistance towards establishing crematoriums, with funds scheduled to be released to districts progressively.
In a report submitted before the Meghalaya High Court, the state government said it is committed to implementing the crematorium projects in a phased and prioritised manner.
A division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh examined the progress following the court’s directives on April 15.
The court noted that the Chief Secretary had convened a meeting to assess the status of actions taken in response to the court’s order. Additional advocate general, K. Khan told the court that land has been made available for new cremation sites; however, identification of specific locations is pending.
Amicus curiae N. Syngkon called for prompt action by the district administration in constructing crematoriums once suitable land is allocated, including considerations for sites in Kenmynsaw and Syntein villages, East Khasi Hills district.
