Shillong, Feb 27: The Meghalaya government will host the February edition of the monthly farmers’ market in the city on Saturday.
The market will be hosted at the parking lot of the Directorate of Fisheries, opposite St. Edmund’s College in Risa Colony..
Organised by 1917 iTEAMS under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and supported by the Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission (MFEC), the initiative aims to provide farmers with a direct, transparent farm-to-consumer platform, ensuring better price realisation and stronger rural-urban market linkages.
The February edition will spotlight Meghalaya’s seasonal strengths, particularly fresh strawberries, premium black pepper and other locally cultivated produce, along with diverse products from horticulture, agriculture and more. The curated stalls will represent multiple districts, offering consumers access to fresh, safe and locally sourced products directly from growers.
The monthly farmers’ market is focusing on farmer empowerment and strengthening the local economy. It promotes fair pricing, supports value addition and entrepreneurship, and provides consumers with access to fresh, safe, affordable local produce through a convergence-based approach.
The January edition highlighted winter crops like oranges and pumpkins, enabling direct farmer-to-consumer sales. Featuring 30 diverse stalls, the event included a farm-to-plate live kitchen run by trained Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) members, who generated over Rs 20,000 in sales. Additionally, a partnership with the local quick-commerce app SOMOI allowed farmers and entrepreneurs to expand their reach and sell local products online across Shillong.
