A family was attacked for allegedly practising witchcraft, (Nong-ai Taro).
The incident happened at Saba village in West Jaiñtia Hills district yesterday. The attack was perpetrated on the house of Nijanduh Phawa and her husband Nikolas Nartiang.
Two huts were burnt down and the house was damaged after stones were pelted. No injuries were reported.
Relatives of the family, Emiki Phawa and Chilangki Phawa told Highland Post that the incident happened when only five children of the couple were present in the house while their parents had gone to Mynksan for medical check-up. Following the incident the children had gone into hiding.
Emiki said the rumours of “nongai taro” was doing the rounds for the past one month that even the dorbar shnong decided to ostracise the family.
An FIR was lodged today by the affected family at the Nartiang police station. As per the complaint, the waheh shnong and his executive committee members had ostracise the family from the village accusing them of practising witchcraft.
The couple also named one Shirup Suchiang, Kyrpad Lamare and Shanbor Suchiang and Damehi Timung for attacking the house on May 14 and May 15. They said all of them were involved in breaking the house and burnt down their huts.
Meanwhile, waheh shnong of Saba, A. Suchiang denied the involvement of the dorbar shnong and stated that miscreants were behind the attack.
He said that the dorbar shnong will help police nab the culprits.
Police said a case has been registered a case but no arrests have been made so far.
