Extreme weather warnings for all of Meghalaya will remain in place for Friday, according to the latest update from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Seven districts will be under a red alert – East Garo Hills, South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills, with the remaining four under brown alert (one level down from red).
The red alert districts could experience heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall in places. East Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills could also experience exceptionally heavy rainfall in isolated places.
Winds of up to 60kmph may be felt in places across the state.
The level of rainfall is expected to decrease from Saturday but weather forecasts are fluid and the IMD may change its advice when it issues a new update tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) reminded the public that it has launched the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) for disaster emergencies. Citizens can call the emergency numbers 112 and 1070 to request help 24×7 when encountering any disaster emergencies in Meghalaya.
The MSDMA also issued an advisory for safe behaviour during the period of extreme rainfall. Daily commuters and long-distance travelers were advised to plan their journeys carefully and avoid travel during periods of intense rainfall. Outdoor recreational activities should also be avoided during such times.
Residents living in low-lying areas, near hillsides, or in locations with ongoing construction should stay alert for any signs of flooding, flash floods or landslides. The public is strongly advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by District Authorities to ensure safety during adverse weather conditions.
