The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) is in the news again for wrong reasons.
The education cell of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has spotted an error in the Social Studies textbook for Class 10 wherein Eastern West Khasi Hills district was mentioned as being under the Garo Hills ‘division’.
This comes just over a month when an error was reported in Social Studies textbook for class III where, under the ‘States, their Capitals and Language Spoken’ lesson, the languages mentioned in the book that Meghalaya people speak are, “Bengali, Nepali and Marathi”.
This had evoked criticism from all quarters even in Arunachal Pradesh. A FIR was also lodged against the false information.
The KSU led by the education secretary, Raymond Kharjana today met MBOSE Joint Director, M. Marbaniang on the matter and expressed concern on the frequency with which Social Studies textbooks contain serious factual errors.
Kharjana said that they were assured that the error will be corrected. He said they were told that there are lapses in reviewing the book.
He further said the board should engage local authors who are conversant with the State so that such mistakes are not repeated, that would mislead students.
