The office of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Ri-Bhoi organised a programme to distribute emergency responder kits to 100 community volunteers who had completed a 12-day training course under the central government’s Aapda Mitra Scheme.
Also present at the programme were Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Arpit Upadhayay, Additional DC MB Tongper, Assistant Commissioner Abhishek Saini and District Disaster Management Officer K Wanniang.
The emergency kits include life jacket, torch, raincoat, boots, first aid kits, helmet, whistle, mosquito net, Aapda Mitra volunteer’s uniform, safety gloves, water bottle, multi function knives, etc.
The Aapda Mitra volunteers are the first responders of the community during any disaster and have been trained so that they can help their communities immediately after a disaster.
The DC said that, due to climate change, the tendency of disasters is increasing and many more people are being affected by cyclonic storms, hailstorms, fires, etc, so he called upon them to be strong enough, efficient and responsive to any emergency in their community, because an early an effective response will save lives.
