The Khliehriat unit of the East Jaiñtia National Council (EJNC) has today written of the need to mend roads in the East Jaiñtia Hills district headquarters.
“The present status of the roads (especially the main road) is totally unacceptable with the roads full of potholes and substandard construction material,” general secretary of the EJNC unit, Mebanteilang Sukhlain, said. “A flash flood or untimely rain is enough to expose the worst situation.”
Heaps of road material lie on both sides of the road and the drains on either side are blocked, forcing water to flood the road, even after a slight rain, Sukhlain added, while stating that a broken culvert is a danger for vehicles.
The worst to suffer are the local commuters, he added, who are always stuck in traffic jams and pedestrians who have to negotiate the clogged roads.
Despite the public having raised this issue several times, the authorities have not taken concrete action, the EJNC said.
