A joint action committee of over eight villages in East Jaiñtia Hills has decided to hold an indefinite strike in protest against the poor condition of the National Highway 6 that connects Assam, Mizoram and Tripura.
The decision was taken at a public meeting held today at Umkiang which was attended by locals of Umkiang, Ratacherra, Dona Skur, Dona Umbluh, Pyrtakuna, Kuliang, Borsara, Tongseng and others.
The indefinite strike will begin on June 19 from 7 am onwards along the Malidor to Tongseng stretch of the national highway, JAC chairman Lasting Pala said.
Only ambulance and security forces will be allowed to ply, he added.
The bustling highway has long been marred by the deplorable condition of the road that has not only become an eyesore but also a constant hazard for vehicles and pedestrians alike.
Pala said the indefinite strike will be withdrawn till the government and the National Highway Authority of India restores it.
