Rajya Sabha MP Wanweiroy Kharlukhi inaugurated the Kambel Shullai Eco-Friendly Crematorium at Syntu Ksiar, Jowai.
Located at Khloo Paiung (Seiñraij Reserve Grove), the crematorium is designed to serve the Niamtre community.
Arwotki Sumer, general secretary of Seiñraij, acknowledged the support of Kharlukhi through the MP Local Area Development Scheme, through which Rs 20 lakh was allocated for the project in 2023-24.
The eco-friendly crematorium aims to reduce the reliance on trees for cremation, providing a sustainable option for final rites in accordance with Niamtre beliefs.
The inauguration was organised by Seinraij Jowai to coincide with World Environment Day and included a tree plantation initiative near the eco-crematorium.
