Eastern West Khasi Hills District today celebrated its first anniversary of districthood at a function held at Madan Mot Tirot in Mairang.
The function was marked by songs and dances, inauguration of several road projects and release of a booklet documenting the achievements of the district since its inauguration.
Meghalaya Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh who attended the function as the chief guest said that the achievement of district was made possible by the unyielding support and co-operation of all stakeholders.
He said the first anniversary celebration provides an opportunity for all to recollect the efforts of all those who were responsible for achievement of district a year ago.
Lyngdoh said the new districts are created to bring administration closer to the people. He expressed hope that offices of different departments will be upgraded into district offices and urged officials to further upscale their efforts in serving the people of the district.
The Mairang MLA further called upon the gathering to assume upon themselves the responsibility of putting in extra efforts in uplifting the overall development of the district with the future objective of transforming it into a model district.
Water Resources Minister, Brolding Nongsiej, Mairang-Nongkhlaw MDC, Batskhem Ryntathiang, Pariong-Mawthadraishan MDC, Jambor War, Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw, P.M Syiemlieh, Syiem of Hima Myriaw, K. Syiem, Syiem of Hima Mawiang, N. Syiem, Deputy Commissioner W. Nongsiej, Superintendent of Police M.B Syiem, district officials, traditional heads, SHG members and people of the area were present on the occasion.
