Shillong, Jul 2: Members of Green Tech Foundation met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today to express their concerns over the Draft Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, 2020.
“Most paragraphs of the draft are in contrast with our mission and vision for a sustainable development with conservation and preservation of the environment,” the members of Green Tech Foundation informed Sangma while submitting a memorandum to him on this issue.
Stating that the Green Foundation does not rise to oppose development, it said, “We are flag bearers of sustainable development however we seek to question why development should come at the cost of environmental degradation?”
Alleging that the draft EIA aims to deplete the environment, Green Tech Foundation informed Sangma that it will never permit such a travesty.
Green Tech Foundation also said that if the said draft is deemed to be published by Official Gazette without revision, the government must ensure that the implementation of this draft should not be done in a ‘blanket’ manner in Meghalaya and rather, the State government should seek total exemption from its provisions.
