Recent heavy rains signal the arrival of the much-desired monsoon but with the wet weather comes risks to life and limb.
The state government today issued a general advisory cautioning the public about what to do, and what not to do, during heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning.
People were warned to take extra care over flash floods, especially near rivers and streams, not to walk through flowing water (streams, rivers, drains), not to drive through flooded areas and to stay away from electric poles and power lines. Tourists were also advised not to venture into streams, rivers and waterfalls during heavy rain.
During lightning storms, people were advised to avoid going outdoors, avoid metal structures or those with metal sheeting. If caught outside during such a storm, avoid elevated areas, water bodies, power lines, overhead wires and trees. If in a forested area, take shelter under small/dwarf trees. Avoid pine trees as these are resinous and could catch fire if struck by lightning.
In case of any emergency, the public may contact the District Emergency Operations Centre on 0364-2225289/2502094 and State Emergency Operations Centre on 0364-2502098.
