The dorbar shnong of Mawkynrew and Mawlein has accused the acting sordar of handing over land for construction of the Ramakrishna Mission School without their knowledge or consent.
Addressing a press conference here today, former sordar of Mawlein Phrangstarwell Wankhar stated that the people are not against construction of the school but the land at Umjar belongs to the Mawkynrew Sports Club.
He also blamed that acting sordar for the clash.
Yesterday, villagers attempted to demolish the under-construction Ramakrishna Mission School but were stopped by police, leading to clashes that left six people injured. Curfew was subsequently clamped in the village by the East Khasi Hills District Magistrate.
Wankhar stated the village needs both the school and the football ground but their contention is that the Ramakrishna Mission School was constructed on land that belongs to the Raid, which was handed over to the Mawkynrew Sports Club.
He said the residents who have come together under the banner of the ‘Sur Paidbah jong ki ar Dorbar Shnong’ will not allow the construction of the Ramakrishna Mission School to resume till the issue of land dispute is resolved.
