Shillong, Jun 4: Kshaid Village Mariang Jingkieng Jri Cooperative Society hosted two programmes aimed at fostering youth engagement, cultural celebration, and community spirit.
The first event was the District Youth Festival organised in coordination with the Deputy Commissioner’s office of East Khasi Hills under the Chief Minister Youth Development Scheme 2023-24.
The event featured a marathon with participants from various regions including East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and Jaintia Hills. Competitors included 50 men and 29 women. Wankyrmen Lyngdoh from Mawphlang clinched first place among men, while Lyntijingkyrmen Kharjahrin triumphed in the women’s category. Each top performer was awarded cash prizes to recognise their achievements. Special awards were also provided to the youngest and oldest participants.
Following the marathon, participants from various villages participated in the youth engagement session. With guidance from resource persons representing different government departments, topics ranged from eco-tourism to entrepreneurship as well as innovation. Critical issues like mental health and substance abuse were also discussed, motivating youth to combat these challenges.
The second programme of the traditional singing and drawing competition was held, showcasing talent and creativity.
Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem, who attended the event as the chief guest emphasised the importance of bringing together different departments to support the youth and assured his continued cooperation. He pledged to handhold and guide the younger generation, with the vision of building a brighter future for both the youth and the society at large.
