Debris dumped in the Wah Myntdu from a road project is responsible for muddy water being supplied through Jowai’s taps, the Khooid Ya Ka Wah Myntdu (KYM) group has said.
KYM has put the blame for this on Dhar Construction Company and the Public Works Department (Roads), the latter for allowing the dumping of the debris into the river.
KYM president Khroo Lamsalanki Pariat stated that residents of Jowai and neighbouring villages are upset about the constant muddy water supply by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department to their households.
Roadworks, specifically to construct the Jowai Bypass, is ruining the Myntdu River, which is a major source of water for Jowai, and the public have been receiving muddy water for the last two years, Pariat said.
“The public’s complaints to the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills have been ignored,” he added. “If this continues, households in Jowai will continue to receive muddy water supply and farmers’ produce will be affected by the debris that engulfs their farmlands.”
