Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday visited Lapangap village to assess the situation following a recent incident of violence.
He was accompanied by JHADC CEM Thombor Shiwat, Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh and Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa.
On June 25, over 400 people from Lapangap village and adjoining areas, backed up by members of pressure groups, dismantled and burned a wooden structure and uprooted tree saplings as a mark of protest against plantation activities carried out by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
Dhar told reporters that the violence stems from the plantation drive and another is that the villagers are unable to access their paddy fields.
He assured that the matters will be discussed with the Chief Minister and the government will ensure the safety of villagers.
Meghalaya government has set up a temporary police station at Lapangap and deployed 30 policemen working round the clock to maintain peace and order. The Assam government has also deployed police across the border.
Dhar, also the chairman of the Regional Committee for West Jaintia Hills, urged the villagers to gather the required land documents as both states work on resolving the border dispute.
