The report of the delimitation committee of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will be placed in the KHADC session tomorrow along with amendment rules that are in line with the proposals in the delimitation report.
This was informed by KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member, Pynshngain N. Syiem to media persons here today after a meeting of the executive committee to discuss the report which was submitted by the delimitation committee yesterday.
It may be noted that the monsoon session of the KHADC will begin tomorrow.
“The executive committee in its meeting today unanimously accepted the report of the delimitation committee,” Syiem said.
According to Syiem, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Constitution of District Councils) (Amendment) Rules 2024 will be placed in the House so that it becomes an Act and elections can be held as per the recommendations of the delimitation committee.
He said that the delimitation committee did its best to rationalise the number of voters in all 29 constituencies despite not receiving the electoral rolls from most districts except East Khasi Hills in order to get the present number of voters.
Syiem also gave a gist of the adjustments made in constituencies as per the delimitation report.
“From Mawlai they adjusted (the voters) to other constituencies like Jaiaw and Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah. Since Laban-Mawprem constituency is small it has been adjusted with Malki-Laitumkhrah. Even for Nongthymmai there needs to be adjustment with neighbouring constituency Malki-Laitumkhrah,” he said.
Syiem also said that the amendment rules that will be passed by the KHADC in this session will be sent to the Governor for his approval.
Stating that the upcoming KHADC elections will be held on the basis of the amendment rules related to delimitation of constituencies, Syiem also said that it is for the State government to decide when the election to the KHADC will be held.
It may be mentioned that the KHADC had constituted the delimitation committee through a notification issued on October 20, 2023.
Due to the delimitation exercise, the tenure of the present house in KHADC which was supposed to end in March 2024, was extended for a period of six months.
