The central government’s plan to open up Covid-19 vaccination to all those above 18 years of age has apparently hit a major roadblock in terms of supply, with the Health Department informing that those in the 18-44 age group in Meghalaya will have to wait a little while longer before being able to get their jabs.
Online registration on www.cowin.gov.in began today for those in this age group. Online registration is mandatory for the 18-44s.
“The state has placed an order for adequate number of vaccines with the Serum Institute of India, Pune, (which is making the Covishield vaccine) and their delivery schedule is still awaited,” Principal Secretary Sampath Kumar said in a press release today. “This seems to be the case with most other states as well. Hence, vaccination for 18-44 years age group in Meghalaya shall not commence on May 1.”
The exact date for commencement will be notified “in due course”.
However, Kumar encouraged those in this age bracket to, in the meantime, register themselves for the vaccine.
Meanwhile, vaccination for those above 45, frontline workers and healthcare workers will “continue as usual at the designated vaccination centres”.
