After sitting out in the political cold for the past four and a half years, former cabinet minister Deborah Marak is hoping to make her return to the Assembly from Williamnagar.
Deborah came third in 2018, behind the winner, Marcuise Marak of the National People’s Party, and independent Sengbirth R Marak.
The Congresswoman has already completed a first round of campaigning and said that the response has been good. “People want me back and they also want the Congress Party back,” she added.
The Congress, decimated by defections, has to start from scratch once again but will focus strongly on alleged corruption under the NPP-led government.
Most of the Congress legislators followed former party stalwart Dr Mukul Sangma into the TMC. However, there are murmerings that many may end up in another party’s camp by the time of the election, which has to be held by March 2023.
Deborah hit out at these defectors, saying that this is proof that they have a shaky mind and are incapable of decisive decisions.
Meanwhile, the former cabinet minister said she hoped to see more women in the Assembly next year.
There are currently only four female MLAs in the Meghalaya Assembly.
Deborah said that women are able to perform any role, be it mother or politician when the task is in front of them. She added that, after all the challenges, they cannot be complacent and will have to work hard.
