The Federation of Shillong Hotels has decided to phase out the use of plastic bottled water and instead provide customers and guests with clean filtered water in a bid to reduce waste.
According to the federation’s president, Parambir S Sehdave, the representative body met with the Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety and adopted three resolutions on the occasion of this year’s World Environment Day.
The federation has requested all hotels, guest houses and restaurants to sanitise the environment with some small steps that can have a huge impact, including that all hospitality establishments avoid the use of bottled drinking water and instead provide clean filtered drinking water in clean glass bottles.
Furthermore, stickers will be made and pasted inside tourist taxis to deter travellers from littering public places and provide them with solutions to dispose of waste generated while consuming eatables inside the vehicle. Additionally the District Transport Officer will be approached by the federation to make it mandatory for all tourist cabs to carry small dustbins.
Every hotel and restaurant has also been requested to plant one sapling each on June 5, World Environment Day.
