Shillong, May 22: The Meghalaya cricket community was plunged into a sexual harassment scandal after several female cricketers filed a complaint with the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) against their coach and manager.
The players are from the Meghalaya Cricket Association’s (MCA’s) U-23 team. They alleged that the coach and manager had subjected them to verbal harassment, inappropriate remarks and private communication through WhatsApp.
Speaking to reporters, MSCW Chairperson Iamonlang Syiem confirmed that the commission has taken cognisance of the matter. She said the women cricketers approached the office on Thursday in connection with the complaint.
The MSCW has sought a detailed report from former MCA President Nababrata Bhattacharjee, former Honorary Treasurer Dhrubajyoti Thakuria and Honorary Secretary Rayonald Kharkamni. They have been asked to explain why no action was not taken given that the matter had been brought to the MCA’s attention earlier.
This suggests that the incident was related to the U-23 women’s T20 team, which participated in a BCCI tournament before the current new apex council of the MCA took charge in December.
The coach and the manager have also been summoned regarding the allegations.
