Shillong, Oct 14: Police rescued a 35-year-old man after a mob wanted to lynch him on suspicion of being a ‘menshohnoh’, i.e. allegedly involved in human sacrifice.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said one Arnikstar Ryntathiang was detained at the community hall of Kynroh Nongbri village after he was found wandering aimlessly at around 9 last night.
He said a police team rushed to the village to find him being guarded by the Kynroh Nongbri village elders and the Sordar of Umthlong village as the mob from the village were shouting, pelting stones and wanted to lynch the victim, suspecting him to be a ‘menshohnoh’ .
A Special Operation Team along with the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operations) from Shillong and the officer in charge of Mawngap police station later safely rescued the victim from the community hall.
Syiem said the victim, a resident of Mawthlong village in Eastern West Khasi Hills district, is mentally challenged and undergoing treatment at MIMHANS Shillong. He was later sent for medical examination at Sohiong CHC where the medical officer on duty confirmed that he received minor injuries.
The SP said a case has been registered at Mawngap Police Station for further investigation and legal action.
