Shillong, Sep 18: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has expressed strong opposition over police action against its East Jaintia Hills unit general secretary Kwilness Suchiang.
According to the KSU, police came to Suchiang’s residence and took him to Sadar Police Station for questioning regarding his alleged involvement in the pressure group’s bike rally of August 19, which turned violent.
The KSU said police appear to be linking Suchiang to acts of vandalism that occurred on August 19 merely because he participated in a prayer and invocation before the rally began.
The union said participating in a prayer before a public programme cannot be considered involvement in vandalism.
Several senior members of the KSU have been arrested over the rally – several central body leaders on the day of the incident and others over the following days and weeks.
“Continuing to accuse and summon KSU members merely because of their association with the organisation, without showing actual involvement, cannot be considered proper investigation,” the union said.
The KSU said it respects law and rule of law but respecting law does not mean silently accepting action that goes against justice and fairness. It said it will not remain silent when powers of government, particularly police powers, are allegedly used to intimidate or suppress public voice, and will continue to stand for rule of law, justice and fairness.
