State Congress president Vincent Pala has not given up on trying to woo back ex-Chief Minister and current chief adviser to the state government, DD Lapang, into the party fold despite the veteran’s apparent reluctance.
Lapang, who quit the Congress in favour of the National People’s Party prior to the 2018 state election, had recently said that he is not keen on rejoining his old party.
Lapang’s return has been publicly called for by Congress workers from Ri-Bhoi, his old stomping ground.
“I am confident that, if we do well, Lapang will return. His mind and heart are with the Congress but, because of certain reasons, he had left,” Pala said. Lapang had reportedly fallen out in a big way with Dr Mukul Sangma, who took over from him as CM in 2010.
Pala will first talk to the Congress high command, which he will meet in New Delhi on November 18, but personally said that he is “very keen” and would “love” to have Lapang back in the Congress and that he is “not giving up” on the matter just yet.
