Community leaders of Nongrah Pyllun in Ri Bhoi, school children and their parents took to the streets to condemn the recent brutal attack on a pregnant woman.
The incident took place on March 19, when a man identified as Kyrshanlang Marngar, attacked Ellana Lyngdoh Mawphlang on her way to work.
The victim, who is pregnant, works at Umroi Airport and lives in a rented house at Umroi Nongrah village.
The protest, which was led by the Umroi Nongrah village authorities, demanded strict punishment for the accused, who has been arrested.
Speaking at the protest, village elders and women’s representatives expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of violence, especially against women and children. They highlighted that this was not an isolated case, as similar assaults have occurred in the past, instilling fear in the community. Many also linked these crimes to the growing problem of substance abuse.
The community members extended their appreciation to the police department for taking swift action in arresting the perpetrator. They also stressed the need for continued vigilance to ensure such crimes do not happen again in the future.
